Chopin: Ballades & Nocturnes

The four Ballads for piano, composed between 1835 and 1842 have a particular status in Chopin's production. As opposed to the small forms' inspired by dances, like waltzes or mazurkas, they give birth to vast developments of a new genre, almost revolutionary, bearing an epic breath characteristic of the emergence of the Romantic Age. Like his friend Delacroix, who knew how to express the spirit of his times to be heroic in his paintings, Chopin here develops the aesthetical line of the musical story, rich of multiple sparkling colours'. The piano, on which Arthur Schoonderwoerd plays, is an exact contemporary of the pieces executed and was miraculously conserved in its original state.
